40 – Norview Pilots (2016 Record: 13 – 4) Head Coach: Dealton Cotton, Conference: Virginia 5A
The Virginia 5A semifinalists will be looking to match last season’s offensive production of 41.2 points
per contest. With the graduation of players like QB Darriel Mack (University of Central Florida), RB Kevin
Marks Jr. (Buffalo) and WR Isaiah King (Buffalo) Coach Dealton will look to the next generation of Pilots.
Players like Sophomore WR Khamran Laborn will be looked to for offensive production. On the other
side of the ball Seniors DE Derrick Eason and CB Keonte Wood will look to slow down offenses in
Southern Virginia.
39 – William Byrd Terriers (2016 Record: 10 – 2) Head Coach: Jeff Highfill, Conference: Virginia 4A
The Terriers are coming off a trip to the Virginia 4A semifinals. Coach Highfill will look to Senior RB Larry
Basham to lead an offense that averaged 36.9 points per game. The Terriers will look to DT Taylor
Johnson along with fellow Senior LBs Logan Taylor and Terrell Smith to slow down opposing offenses.
38 – Lafayette Rams (2016 Record: 13 – 1) Head Coach: Andy Linn, Conference: Virginia 4A
The Rams were perfect before falling to Salem in the state semifinals. Coach Linn is going to reload after
the graduation of WR Hezekiah Grimsley (Virginia Tech), RB Caleb Kraegenbrink (Duquesne) and MLB
Tristen Packer (Wingate University). It will be up to a pair of LBs, Senior Armonii Burden and Junior Trey
Canady to lead a defense which allowed 13.1 points each outing in 2016. On offense Lafayette turns to
Junior RB Dea-Mario Tyler to be the workhorse for the offense.
37 – Lake Taylor Titans (2016 Record: 11 – 2) Head Coach: Hank Sawyer, Conference: Virginia 4A
Coach Sawyer’s Titans made it to the quarterfinals of the Virginia 4A playoffs last season thanks to an
explosive offense which averaged 41.9 points per contest. Senior RB Deon Smith and Junior QB Javon
Harvey will look to match last season’s production. Meanwhile Senior MLB Jalen Burton will lead a unit
which held opponents under 10 points six times last season.
36 – Calvert Hall Cardinals (2016 Record: 7 – 5) Head Coach: Donald Davis, Conference: MIAA A
The Cardinals are hoping to bounce back after a so-so season in the brutal MIAA A. With the graduation
of QB Ben Brooks (Trinity University) Junior Mike Campbell will likely get the nod at signal-caller for
Coach Davis. The first-year starter will be helped by Seniors WR Chris Cooper and T Reginald Sutton. On
the other side of the ball future Terrapin LB Chance Campbell and fellow Senior CB Isaiah Watson come
back to a defense that allowed an average of 16.6 points per game.
35 – Woodberry Forest Tigers (2016 Record: 9 – 1) Head Coach: Scott Braswell, Conference: VISAA I
2016 was an amazing season for the Tigers. However, with the former Coach Alexander moving on to
Grand Blanc HS in Michigan and QB Lindell Stone suiting up for the Virginia Cavaliers 2017 will be a
rebuilding year. Coach Braswell comes with a stellar record of 167-51 after 17 seasons on the sideline
for Hoggard HS in North Carolina. He will have Junior WR DeQuece Carter along with Seniors RB Jameel
Wilson and Harvard commit CB/WR Khalid Thomas to help Freshman phenom QB Ben Locklear adjust to
the high school game.
34 – Franklin Indians (2016 Record: 11 – 2) Head Coach: Anthony Burgos, Conference: Maryland Class 3A
After making it to the Class 3A finals last season Coach Burgos and the Indians are looking to make
another deep run in the state playoffs. Franklin’s defense set the tone in 2016 allowing 7.6 points each
Friday night. Returning to that unit are Sophomore SS Sire Hopkins and Junior MLB Jay Thompson and
they’ll have the addition of Senior transfer DT Calvin Carroll. Junior QB Emmett Avery II along with
Seniors WR Assanti Kearney and RB Samuel Botchway will look to keep up last season’s average of 30.4
points per game.
33 – Quince Orchard Cougars (2016 Record: 12 – 2) Head Coach: John Kelley, Conference: Maryland
Class 4A
Coach Kelley and the Cougars are coming off a successful season where their only losses were to a pair
of state champions. The dynamic Senior duo of QB Kendall ‘Doc’ Bonner and WR Elijah Payne come back
to an explosive offense which scored 35 or more points 10 times in 2016. On defense Quince Orchard
brings back Junior LB Johnny Hodges and Senior FS Aaron Derwin II to a unit which allowed 10 or less
points 7 times.
32 – Bishop McNamara Mustangs (2016 Record: 4 – 6) Head Coach: Keita Malloy, Conference: WCAC
With former coach Keith Goganious on the staff of IMG Academy Coach Malloy takes over the reins of
the Mustangs program. The Bishop McNamara alum will look to SeniorsOffensive Linemen Maryland
commit Spencer Anderson, Rulond ‘Rudy’ Holland Jr. and Steven Scott II to keep Senior QB Stanton
Askew upright against the brutal defenses of the WCAC. On defense Cornerbacks Junior Tyme Collins
and Senior Robert Edwars will look to shutdown wideouts in one of America’s top football conferences.
31 – Staunton River Golden Eagles (2016 Record: 13 – 2) Head Coach: Charles Poston, Conference:
Virginia 3A
The Golden Eagles are coming off a trip to the state finals and are poised to be contenders in the Virginia
3A conference once again. Coach Poston has the duo of Senior RBs Kalip Jones and T.J. Tester coming
back to a unit that averaged 48.1 points a contest last season. In 2016 the Staunton River defense held
opponents under 10 points in 5 games. Returning Seniors LBs Grayson Overstreet and Dakoda Williams
will look to shut down offenses in Western Virginia once again.
