Calvert Hall LOOKS like a Contender, by Tom Peace

When Calvert Halls Tariq Fields recovered the opening kickoff after a muffed catch attempt by Dundalk it seemed like that turnover was what will set the tone for the rest of the game.

The turnover led to a Caleb Biggers 9-yard run for Calvert Halls first score. And then an Owls blocked punt which led to a score and a pick-6 helped guide the Cardinals (2-0) to a 42-7 victory at home on Saturday night.

Dundalk just couldn’t stop turning the football over in the first half. Jaden Beckles timed his burst to the Owls punter perfectly and blocked it and scooped it up and waltzed into the end zone.

Then the Owls were trying to right the ship down, 14-0. But with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter Mike Neal was lurking and snatched the ball out of the air and ran it the other way for 62-yards.

Calvert Hall quarterback Cole Herbert (committed to North Carolina for Lacrosse) was slinging the ball all over the field,hitting his receivers and he even ran in for a score from 1-yard out. “We played great tonight On both sides of the ball. Our offense is starting to come together as a unit. We knew the game plan for the game and we executed it perfectly.”

It was good to see what the defense and offense could do for Calvert Hall against a formidable opponent in Dundalk. But the special teams stepped up when they had to and it paid off in the end.

Now the Cardinals will get ready for another test for next week when they’ll face defending state champs, Wise.

“They (Dundalk) weren’t as big as us up front so we played hard-nose football and wore them down physically.”

“We have a tough opponent in Wise next week but we know Coach (Donavan) Davis will prepare us to win.”

Dundalk will look to rebound against Patapsco.
